Marine Biology and Ecology Department
The activity of the department is focused on the development of scientific bases for application of the ecosystem approach in the management of human activities related to the use of marine biological resources; study of the Black Sea biodiversity at a population-genetic, species, habitat and ecosystem levesl, including functional and trophic interactions between organisms; monitoring and assessment of the ecological status of the water and the status of the marine environment; development of indicators and classification systems for environmental assessment; assessment of the stocks and population parameters of the intensively exploited fish species in the Black Sea; issuing recommendations for conservation, restoration and sustainable use of fish and non-fish biological resources; developing scientific approaches to the conservation and restoration of the biological diversity, including designation and management of marine protected areas and zones; development of scientific bases for cultivation of hydrobionts.
