Marine Geology and Archaeology Department
In accordance with the priorities of the Blue Economy and sustainable development through the application of geomorphological, geological and geophysical methods in the department are carried out studies on the geological structure of the Black Sea coast, shelf and deep water zone; lithology, stratigraphy, sedimentology of the Quaternary sediments; lithofacial changes and spatial relationships of marine sediments; reconstruction of climate change and sea level fluctuations in order to forecast global climate change. The mineral resources in the shelf area of the EEZ of the Republic of Bulgaria and especially the gas hydrates are studied, given their importance for our country. The geological risk of earthquakes, mud volcanoes, tsunami, landslides, rock falls and abrasion is assessed. Coastal and underwater geoarchaeological landscapes are explored. Problems in the economic utilization of the water area are solved using modern concepts of geological structure, sedimentogenesis and geomorphology of the seabed relief. GIS for marine and coastal surveys is applied, maps and 3-D models are created, a geo-information system of the Bulgarian sector of the Black Sea and the coastal zone is created and maintained.
